One of the highest honors given to an alumnus by the College of Pharmacy is the Alumnus of the Year Award which recognizes a graduate who has had a distinguished career, exhibits leadership, and has contributed significantly to the pharmacy profession. Dr. S. Albert Edwards, RAC, FRAPS receives this top honor in recognition of his exceptional career in government, industry and academia.

Dr. Edwards received his BS in Pharmacy in 1969 and was employed for 42 years in the pharmaceutical and life sciences arenas. Twenty-five of those years were dedicated to research and regulation in the food additive and the pharmaceutical businesses. Prior to his industry time, Al had other careers working for the US Food and Drug Administration, as a medical reviewer; the National Institutes of Health, as a scientist; and in four College of Pharmacy settings as a teacher, researcher, and clinical pharmacist. From 1990 until June, 2010, he was the Director, Regulatory Affairs Operations, at Takeda Global Research & Development Center, in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Since retirement in 2010, Al has organized a consulting business, S. Albert Edwards, PharmD, LTD, for “helping people understand FDA processes.” While he has many pursuits in retirement, he believes that interfacing with UIC Pharmacy students is “at or near the very top” of his list. He currently accomplishes this as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Pharmacy Systems, Outcomes, and Policy.

Al along with his wife, Janice, have also supported a generous student scholarship for P-1s or P-2s, which serves to help students concentrate on their academic pursuits and worry less about finances.

Al has two grown children, Jami and Robert, two grandchildren, Macie and Matthew, and two foster grandchildren, McKinsey and Patricia.
