Infectious Diseases

The Section of Infectious Disease Pharmacotherapy was established in 1996. It provides clinical pharmacy services at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System at Chicago, and to the Chicago Community Programs for Clinical Research on AIDS, the Cook County Hospital and the Core Center of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services Clinics.

The section is active in both clinical and basic science research. Through the Microbiology Research Laboratory, it conducts basic and applied research on antimicrobial systems from Phase I through IV. It also explores activity of new compounds, studies the improved use of both new and old antimicrobials, and new approaches to pharmacotherapy for drug resistant infections.

The section has one of the largest Pharmacy Infectious Disease Fellowship training programs in the U.S. As a result the section has become a major factor in training the next generation of pharmacy educators, researchers and practitioners in the area of infectious diseases pharmacotherapy.

The Section of Infectious Disease Pharmacotherapy is also active in the area of educational programming for pharmacists and other health care providers. Its goals are to provide educational information and programing to pharmacists in a six-state area about Infectious Disease pharmacotherapy as it relates to HIV infection. Every year, the section holds two continuing education conferences: the spring conference focuses on issues of HIV pharmacotherapy and the fall conference focuses on new concepts and controversies in the area of Infectious Disease. Educational outreach has also led to the section's involvement in the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center (MATEC) which is based in the Jane Addams College of Social work.
