Overview:
Dr. DiDomenico, Pharm.D., FCCP, HFSA, FACC is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, a member of the Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomic Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and Cardiovascular Clinical Pharmacist at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System with a practice site in inpatient cardiology. He has also served as Residency Program Director for the UIC PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy residency, mentoring 10 residents in this program between 2008 – 2020. Dr. DiDomenico received his PharmD (1996) and completed three years of post-doctoral training (Pharmacy Practice Residency, 1997; Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy Fellowship, 1999) at UIC.

He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and abstracts on topics related to cardiovascular pharmacotherapy and has gained national recognition as a key opinion leader in the areas of heart failure, anticoagulation, and coronary artery disease. He is also an active member of several organizations including the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS), having served as a member of the inaugural Specialty Council on Cardiology. His organizational engagement has earned him fellowship designation in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (FCCP), American College of Cardiology (FACC), and the Heart Failure Society of America (FHFSA).

Research Interests:
Dr. DiDomenico joined the tenure track in October, 2017. His research focus is optimizing the use of guideline-directed medical therapies (GDMT) in patients patients with cardiovascular disease, particularly those with heart failure and acute coronary syndrome. He is currently working with a group of investigators across the country investigating optimal parenteral anticoagulation strategies in cardiogenic shock patients treated with the Impella percutaneous left ventricular assist device (pVAD). The Impella pVAD is being used increasingly in patients with cardiogenic shock but there is little guidance for nor consistency in anticoagulation practices during Impella pVAD support. Dr. DiDomenico is also investigating approaches aimed at intensifying GDMT in patients hospitalized for acute heart failure in an effort to improve outcomes, including reducing unplanned rehospitalization. His previous work has demonstrated that many patients with HFrEF whose evidence-based therapies are not at goal doses at the time of hospitalization do not have these therapies intensified prior to discharge, potentially contributing to unplanned readmission.

Dr. DiDomenico is also interested in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), with interests in item-writing, assessment, and delivery.

Teaching Statement:
Dr. DiDomenico has taught in more than 20 core and elective didactic courses. Additionally, he has precepted more than 130 PharmD students completing introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences and more than 160 pharmacy residents (more than 240 learning experiences). He has been awarded Preceptor of the Year by students (2006) and residents (2005, 2008), Teacher of the Year Honorable Mention (2005 by Class of 2007), and nominated for the Golden Apple Award (2008).

He also served as Chair of the Educational Policy Committee from 2008 – 2018 during which time the College of Pharmacy implemented distance-learning technology, expanded to a satellite campus in Rockford, IL, revised and implemented a new curriculum, and was re-accredited.

He has given more than 120 invited talks, many for continuing education credit, at various local, regional, national, and international venues.
