Dean Praises Impact Report in Letter to the Editor

Dean Jerry Bauman

Dean Jerry Bauman

The Journal Standard published a letter to the editor by UIC College of Pharmacy Dean Jerry Bauman. The letter is in response to an earlier article by the publication on the College of Medicine expansion at the Rockford campus.

As the dean of the College of Pharmacy at the UIC Health Sciences Campus in Rockford, I was delighted to read the Oct. 5 article about the College of Medicine expansion. I am overwhelmed by the support of the Rockford community and the area healthcare organizations.

The article alluded to an economic impact study that states the campus contributes $58.2 million of economic impact to the area. However, I believe our overall impact goes far beyond the numbers. The UIC College of Pharmacy at Rockford employs 46 faculty and staff and student enrollment has grown to 128 students. We provide clinical pharmacists for several area hospitals and clinics, which improves the overall healthcare for the community.

Our assistant dean for research, Dr. John Nitiss, along with our faculty, are engaged in pharmaceutical research and offer the only biomedical sciences Ph.D. program in Rockford. The faculty and students provide outreach through a variety of healthy lifestyle choices and disease awareness programs to name a few. We have a proven history of providing leaders to the profession who will contribute greatly to the community.

We’ve only graduated two classes from our Rockford campus but I’m confident the estimated $25 million all of our alumni have contributed to the region will only continue to grow. I want to personally thank the community for its support as we partner to create better healthcare outcomes for the community.

— Jerry Bauman, Chicago
