About
Research Interests:
The year 2024 marked a pivotal point in the refinement and solidification of my research interests. While I have long been passionate about diabetes research, it was during this period that I identified where my contributions could have the greatest impact.
In 2024, I successfully completed recruitment and implementation for the Diabetes-TEAM in the Community study. This project evaluated the use of text messaging as a medium for delivering diabetes education and support to individuals with uncontrolled diabetes, with the goal of assessing its impact on hemoglobin A1c levels and diabetes-related stress. The study was funded by the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois (CFNIL), with recruitment concluding in the spring and the full project wrapping up in the fall of 2024. A manuscript based on this work is currently in development.
In parallel, we finalized and submitted a manuscript for the precursor study, Diabetes-TEAM in an FQHC, to high-impact journals. Additionally, I collaborated with the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford research team to submit a grant proposal to CFNIL aimed at expanding access to continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices for underserved populations with uncontrolled diabetes. Although that particular grant was not awarded, we subsequently submitted a proposal to the UIC Diabetes Center Pilot Program in December 2024 to investigate the impact of monthly telehealth visits compared to standard in-person visits every three months on A1c outcomes among patients using CGMs. We were notified in February 2025 that this grant had been successfully awarded.
Throughout these projects, I have actively involved medical students and residents, as I believe strongly in incorporating hypothesis-driven clinical research into their training to foster critical thinking and scientific inquiry.
Through these experiences, I have come to recognize that my research niche lies in leveraging technology to improve diabetes outcomes among patients who face significant barriers to healthcare access, particularly those affected by adverse social determinants of health. My work is focused on creating innovative, scalable interventions that bridge these gaps and promote health equity.
Teaching Statement:
In 2024, I was actively engaged in teaching across multiple learner levels, contributing to didactic, experiential, and interprofessional education. I continued to serve as course coordinator for PHAR 410: Integrated Physiology for first-year PharmD students. In the fall of 2024, I welcomed a new co-coordinator, which presented a learning curve but ultimately fostered a promising collaboration. We received valuable student feedback and are currently working on implementing several changes aimed at enhancing course communication and improving the overall student learning experience. In addition to my coordination responsibilities, I also deliver lectures and lead recitation sessions for PHAR 410.
This year, I also assumed the role of primary course coordinator for PHAR 520: Applied Pharmaceutics, Pharmacogenomics, and Pharmacokinetics. This new leadership role has significantly strengthened my communication and organizational skills, and I am committed to refining the course further to support both faculty lecturers and student learning. I actively contribute as a lecturer and discussion leader in this course as well. Feedback from course evaluations has been instrumental in guiding improvements in communication and scheduling.
Beyond these formal courses, I continue to provide advanced clinical education across multiple programs. I deliver an advanced diabetes management lecture every six weeks to fourth-year pharmacy students as part of their morning conference series and to medical students during their family medicine clerkship. Additionally, I provide pharmacotherapy lectures to family medicine residents 1–2 times per month, participate in simulation sessions every other month, and serve as a faculty evaluator for Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) held four times per year. I also lecture in the Summer Pharmacy Institute, presenting on the Management of a Patient with Diabetes.
In the experiential education realm, I remained highly involved as a preceptor in 2024. I made myself broadly available and had the opportunity to precept two IPPE students, five APPE students, one pharmacy resident, and one family medicine resident. Additionally, I initiated the planning and development process for precepting in the upcoming Addiction Medicine Fellowship, which is slated to begin in late 2025.
