Overview:
Over two decades in UIC, my interdisciplinary expertise in chemistry and biology focuses on the analysis of natural products, discovery of bioactive principles from plants and other natural sources, and methodological development in natural product research. This includes combining chemical and biological evaluation of natural products with chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), as well as mass spectrometry (MS, LC/GC-MS) that are state-of-the-art in dereplication, structure elucidation and quantification. Familiar with all major classes of NPs through almost three decades of research, I have experience as key personnel in several NIH-supported cross-disciplinary programs which I developed several innovative chemical approaches in natural product research, such as NMR guiding metabolomic mining of new phytochemicals, multi-references standardization of complex extract with NMR methodology, qualification and quantification of metabolomics by mining NMR data. My work led to the establishment of (dynamic) residual complexity to explain biological profiles that change over time; and the chemical subtraction by countercurrent separation has been extended to produce “Knock-out” and “DESIGNER” extracts which were key materials in multiple biological targets study.
Research Interests:
My interesting is mainly on the analysis of natural products, discovery of bioactive principles from different natural sources, and methodological development in natural product research. These activities include combining evaluation of natural products with chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR and quantitative NMR), as well as mass spectrometry (MS, LC/GC-MS) that are state-of-the-art in dereplication, structure elucidation and quantification.
