Student Pharmacist Emily Beskar Interns with Indian Health Service

Ms. Emily Beskar, PharmD Candidate, Class of 2020 interned with Indian Health Service (IHS) in Gallup, New Mexico this past summer. From learning about the role of Pharmacist Clinicians to assisting in disease state specific clinics run by Clinical Pharmacists, Beskar got to be involved in something new every day and expose herself to the lifestyles of the Navajo people.

Beskar reports, that "working alongside those who face unique challenges in giving patients well-rounded care was really inspiring because it shows that anything can be accomplished within the healthcare setting as long as we collaborate interprofessionally."  She also stated that "IHS is certainly a great place to be, not only because of the cultural experiences but also due to the exceptional people you interact with on a daily basis."

Beskar is part of the Rural Pharmacy Education Program, also known as RPHARM.  The RPHARM Program, unique to the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy at Rockford, has the goal of educating students about the unique challenges and opportunities present in rural communities and preparing them to practice pharmacy in a patient-centered and interprofessional manner.  Upon completion of the RPHARM Program, Beskar will have earned her PharmD and a concentration in rural pharmacy services.
