CONCENTRATION IN URBAN PHARMACY SERVICES
The UPHARM curriculum represents an innovative approach that takes advantage of our location in Chicago to address the many challenges of health care disparities in underserved communities. The goal of the UPHARM curriculum is to prepare pharmacy leaders who will serve urban communities and increase health care/pharmacist resources and capacity building for the city of Chicago and urban underserved areas in general.
To accomplish this goal, UPHARM program curriculum will focus on the following objectives:
Provide selected students with an understanding of social, environmental, and economic issues that contribute to health disparities in urban settings.
Provide skills that the students will use to address the needs of urban population, including culturally competent communications and physical examination techniques, and teamwork.
Provide cross-cultural clinical skills and knowledge of diseases and medical conditions prevalent in urban areas.
Develop in program participants a commitment to serve as practicing pharmacists and leaders in an urban setting.
Because students’ participation in the UPHARM program is based on a focused, longitudinal curriculum, the goal is that the professional careers of UPHARM graduates will encompass one or more of the following areas: practitioner, advocate, researcher, and policy maker.
