Pharmacy residency training programs are held within the College of Pharmacy at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System. The Department of Pharmacy Practice is the most comprehensive unit of its type in the United States and continues a tradition of exemplary service through its mission of providing quality education, research, and patient care. The department educates and trains students, residents, and fellows as well as practicing pharmacists to become nationally recognized for their leadership, knowledge, and competence in practice, research, and teaching.

Program
The PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
The PGY1 pharmacy residency at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) provides training in overall delivery of healthcare with a major emphasis placed on drug-related issues and practices. During this one-year program, the resident effectively makes the transition from student to independent practitioner under guidance from the clinical faculty. The program also serves to prepare well those planning further specialized training (e.g. PGY2 residencies, fellowships). The main goals of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program are to develop competent clinical pharmacists capable of practicing in any setting by providing exposure to a diverse scope of pharmaceutical care services while fostering leaders in clinical pharmacy practice and education.
UIC PGY1 residents are required to complete 1-month-long rotations in internal medicine, critical care, pediatrics, specialty medicine, drug information, and pharmacy systems. Additionally, a longitudinal ambulatory care clinic experience is required. Based on their professional goals and interests, the resident also will select five elective rotations that can be completed in a variety of clinical areas including, but not limited to, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, solid organ transplant, bone marrow transplant, hematology/oncology, critical care, pediatrics, family medicine/academia, hepatology, ambulatory care clinic, and toxicology. Residents will also conduct a research project, present an ACPE-accredited continuing education seminar, and participate in the teaching certificate program. In addition to the clinical services provided during clinical rotations, the resident will participate in the in-house, clinical on-call program. During on-call shifts, residents will respond to drug information questions from medical services throughout the hospital and outpatient clinics; respond to adult and pediatric number 1 emergencies, stroke codes, and rapid response team calls; provide pharmacokinetic evaluations; conduct discharge medication counseling; and participate in the distributive functions of the department, among other activities. On-call cases will be presented and discussed during Resident Report. Former UIC residents and fellows often identify “report” as the most rewarding aspect of the pharmacy practice residency and the greatest contributing factor to their clinical skills development.
General
Clinical
To assist the Medical Center in providing 24-hour, clinical pharmacy coverage to all UIC patients, residents participate in the On-Call Program, which provides overnight and weekend clinical services. On-call activities typically include responding to “codes,” evaluating antibiotic therapies and adverse drug reactions; monitoring pharmacokinetics; and providing nutrition support and patient counseling services. Residents discuss their on-call cases during daily resident report meetings

Requirements
- The PGY1 Residency requires a PharmD degree
- Pharmacist licensure in Illinois
- Ability to start the residency on July 1

History
Since 1969, over 300 pharmacists successfully trained in our ASHP accredited first-year-post-graduate program. In addition, we have graduated over 100 individuals in our various specialized pharmacy residencies that encompass a wide range of fields that is second to none. Our diverse faculty, in combination with the numerous progressive practice sites, provides our residents with an experience like no other. Our residency alumnae hold prominent positions within pharmacy academia, industry, and professional organizations nationwide and are leaders in the world of pharmacy practice. We are proud of our tradition, our outcomes and our graduates and with the increasing expectations of the public and other health professional to improve the lives of patients, we are confident that our residency programs will grow and develop to meet this challenge. The PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency has long provided unique and exceptional training experiences through its large number of rotation sites, preceptors, the on-call program and resident report. Coupled with the Residency Project, ACPE-accredited seminar and the Teaching Certificate program, this rigorous program provides a strong basis for multiple career pathways.
