Residency training programs in Pharmacy are held within the College of Pharmacy at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System. The Department of Pharmacy Practice, home department of all residency trainees, is the most comprehensive unit of its type in the United States and continues a tradition of exemplary service through its mission of providing quality education, research, and patient care. The department educates and trains students, residents, and fellows as well as practicing pharmacists to become nationally recognized for their leadership, knowledge and competence in practice, research, and teaching.

Program
The PGY1 Community Residency in Specialty Pharmacy is a program that brings together the diverse experiences in the University of Illinois Chicago Wood Street Pharmacy with advanced concepts of pharmaceutical care provided in the specialty outpatient clinics. The resident will have the unique experience of working in a URAC and ACHC accredited Health System Specialty Pharmacy. Coupled with the residency project, ACPE-accredited seminar, teaching certificate program, staffing responsibilities and administrative components, this rigorous program provides a strong basis for promising career opportunities.

General
Clinical
The resident’s clinical duties will be performed in the Specialty Pharmacy Clinical Care Center and also in specialty clinics in the Outpatient Care Center. Residents should expect about 70% of their time to be allocated to clinical duties.
Teaching
- Experiential teaching and precepting of P1-P4 students
- ACPE-accredited seminar
- Didactic lecture(s) to Doctor of Pharmacy Students
- In-services
- Topic discussions
Research
- Design and conduct a practice-based longitudinal research project
- Presentation of research findings at appropriate regional and national professional meetings
- Participation in ongoing clinical research with the Specialty Pharmacy Services team
- Manuscript development and submission
Staffing
- One day per week at Wood Street Pharmacy in accordance with URAC and ACHC Specialty Pharmacy Standards
Administration
- Maintain and update Specialty Pharmacy Services policies & procedures and Patient Management Program criteria to comply with URAC and ACHC Specialty Pharmacy Accreditation standards
- Participate in Specialty Pharmacy Services committees
- Update clinical care guidelines as appropriate
- Data analysis for quality improvement opportunities within Specialty Pharmacy Services
- Research and explore growth opportunities for Specialty Pharmacy Services and work on an implementation plan
Certification
- Immunization certification required
- BLS and/or ACLS certification required
- Resident Teaching Certificate Program
- Additional certificate programs as available
Requirements
- PharmD degree from an ACPE accredited college of pharmacy
- Licensure in Illinois
- Able to start residency on July 1

The Specialty Pharmacy Services Clinical Care Center serves as the home base for the resident where they will participate in various aspects of specialty pharmacy practice including:
- Treatment initiation counseling
- Ongoing medication safety, efficacy, and adherence monitoring
- Facilitation of medication access
- Coordination with healthcare team
- Health literacy testing

History
Since 1969, over 400 pharmacists successfully trained in our ASHP-accredited first-year post-graduate residency program. In addition, we have graduated over 100 individuals in our various specialized pharmacy residencies that encompass a wide range of fields that is second to none. Our diverse faculty, in combination with the numerous progressive practice sites, provides our residents with an experience like no other. Our residency alumnae hold prominent positions within pharmacy academia, industry, and professional organizations nationwide and are leaders in the world of pharmacy practice. We are proud of our tradition, our outcomes and our graduates and with the increasing expectations of the public and other health professionals to improve the lives of patients, we are confident that our residency programs will grow and develop to meet this challenge.
