Jim Wang named 2018 UIC Distinguished Researcher of the Year in Basic Life Sciences
Today the UIC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Office of Technology Management announced the recipients of the 2018 UIC Researcher and Scholar of the Year awards, which recognize and celebrate the efforts and commitment of individuals who advance knowledge as well as inspire and promote continued excellence in research and scholarship at UIC. Professor Jim Wang, Biopharmaceutical Sciences, was named the 2018 UIC Distinguished Researcher of the Year in Basic Life Sciences.
Well known as an innovative thinker, Dr. Z. Jim Wang has made groundbreaking contributions to the fields of chronic pain management, drug abuse and natural product pharmacology. He has been continuously funded by NIH and other private sources for close to 20 years. His pioneering work on the neurobiology of pain associated with sickle cell anemia helped motivate NIH to release over $9M in grant funding specifically for this topic. A favored keynote speaker at international conferences, as well as a permanent member of the NIH Somatosensory and Pain Systems Study Section appointed by the Director of the NIH, Dr. Wang has been named a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutic Scientists. Viewed as one of the few people in the world capable of addressing biological questions at the molecular, cellular, genetic, epigenetic and systems levels, Dr. Wang is an outstanding researcher who enthusiastically participates in interdisciplinary collaborations, always bringing an insatiable curiosity and a willingness to thoughtfully consider and share all ideas. He is a dedicated mentor, outstanding colleague and well deserving of the honor of being named the 2018 UIC Distinguished Researcher of the Year in Basic Life Sciences.
In honor of the recipients of the UIC Researcher and Scholar of the Year Award and the Inventor of the Year, an awards ceremony and reception will be held on February 6, 2019, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Michele M.
