Yury Polikanov named 2018 UIC Rising Star Researcher of the Year in Basic Life Sciences
The UIC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Office of Technology Management announced the recipients of the 2018 UIC Researcher and Scholar of the Year awards, which recognize and celebrate the efforts and commitment of individuals who advance knowledge as well as inspire and promote continued excellence in research and scholarship at UIC. Assistant Professor Yury Polikanov, Medicinal Chemistry & Pharmacognosy (as well as Biological Sciences), was named the 2018 UIC Rising Star of the Year in Basic Life Sciences.
In just three years at UIC, Dr. Yury Polikanov has exceeded expectations and laid a foundation for a highly productive scientific career. Citied for his ingenuity, collaborative spirit and technical acumen, Dr. Polikanov studies the biochemistry of the ribosome. His research aims at uncovering the basic principles of protein synthesis in bacteria and the mechanisms by which certain antibiotics can lead to the development of antimicrobial resistance. This work will facilitate the development of the next generation of antimicrobial compounds as well as clinical approaches to prevent the spread of drug-resistant infections. Over the past three years, Dr. Polikanov has published twelve high-profile papers, including ten as senior author, received an NIH R21 award, and earned an outstanding 14th percentile score on his pending NIH R01. He has developed techniques that have already been adopted by other research laboratories as well as the pharmaceutical industry. With over 2 million people currently infected with antibiotic resistant bacteria, Dr. Polikanov’s research will have a significant impact on global health. In recognition of this excellent record, Dr. Polikanov has been selected as the 2018 Rising Star awardee in the field of Basic Life Sciences at UIC.
In honor of the recipients of the UIC Researcher and Scholar of the Year Award and the Inventor of the Year, an awards ceremony and reception will be held on February 6, 2019, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Michele M. Thompson Rooms of the UIC Student Center West at 828 South Wolcott Avenue. To RSVP for the award ceremony, or for more information, please go to http://research.uic.edu/roy/rsvp.
