Celebrating American Pharmacists Month: Dr. Edith Nutescu | Pharmacy Heroes

Dr. Nutescu

For American Pharmacists Month, the UIC College of Pharmacy is celebrating some of its pharmacy heroes for their contributions to the profession and for the top-notch care they provide.

Today we are honoring Dr. Edith Nutescu (PharmD ’94), the Michael Reese Endowed Professor in Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy and head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Recently, Dr. Nutescu was able to add the ACCP Therapeutic Frontiers Lecture Award to her long list of career accolades.

Dr. Nutescu received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the UIC College of Pharmacy and her Master in Clinical and Translational Science from the UIC School of Public Health. She completed pharmacy practice and specialty residency (primary care with cardiology emphasis) training at Advocate Health Care, Lutheran General Hospital and UIC.

Dr. Nutescu’s research interests focus on comparative effectiveness and safety of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy and thromboembolic diseases. She has authored over 180 scientific articles and her research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, The Department of Health and Human Services, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the National Center for Research Resources, among others. “Anticoagulation Therapy: A Clinical Practice Guide,” is used nationally and internationally to guide clinical practice guidelines and the bedside management of patients on anticoagulation therapy.

Dr. Nutescu has been recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) and is a recipient of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists Foundation Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety. She also received the American College of Clinical Pharmacy’s Clinical Practice Award - the Russel R. Miller Award - for her substantial contributions to the literature of clinical pharmacy.

Her most recent honor, the ACCP Therapeutic Frontiers Lecture Award, recognizes an ACCP member or nonmember who has made outstanding contributions to pharmacotherapeutics in his or her field and is broadly considered at the leading edge of research in the field. Dr. Nutescu’s extensive research and work has made her an internationally recognized expert in anticoagulant safety and efficacy and we are #UICProud to have her leadership at our College.
