Summer Series – Thomas Poznanski

Tom Poznanski

Our Summer Series highlights student pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists who are doing summer internships or fellowships.

Thomas Poznanski, rising P3, recently started a Pharmacovigilance and Patient Safety internship in the Safety Data Science department at AbbVie.

"I help with safety surveillance with two of AbbVie's products. We look at data and information from clinical trials, patient/clinician testimonials, and post-marketing studies, as well as safety literature about medications of the same class that treat the same indication," says Thomas.

Thomas had the opportunity to intern at AbbVie during the summer of 2017 as an undergraduate student, so he was familiar with the company and knew he wanted to intern again. "I saw the listing on the portal and applied! It was as simple as that." After multiple rounds of interviews, Thomas was offered the prestigious internship.

At two weeks into his internship, Thomas is enjoying his time at AbbVie and is learning new things every day. "I also help with drafting documents that are later sent to regulatory agencies such as the FDA. Whether a drug is in the clinical trial phase, post-marketing phase, or in trials for a new indication, Developmental Safety Update Reports (DSUR) and Periodic Safety Update Reports (PSUR) need to be filed with regulatory agencies on a yearly basis that compile all of the possible safety signals that arose for the products."
