Overview:
Dr. Elmes, PharmD, MHPE, BCPS is an Assistant (non-tenure) Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, a member of the Institute for Research on Addictions at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), and Family Medicine Clinical Pharmacist at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System with a practice site in street medicine. She has also served as Fellowship Program Director for the UIC Academic/Family Medicine Fellowship since 2022. Dr. Elmes received her PharmD (2019) from the University of Pittsburgh and completed three years of post-doctoral training (Pharmacy Practice Residency (ambulatory care-focused), 2020 – Northeastern University; Academic/Family Medicine Fellowship, 2022 – UIC).
She has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and abstracts on topics related to substance use disorder and competency-based education. She is also an active member of several organizations, including the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and the American Society for Addiction Medicine.
Research Interests:
Dr. Elmes joined the research track in August 2024. Her ultimate goal is to drive an outcomes-focused, collaborative research program that centers on and evaluates the clinical implementation of mobile unit/street medicine services that feature innovative techniques to reach people who use drugs where they live and congregate and that incorporate clinical pharmacists as an integral component of the interprofessional healthcare and educational team. Dr. Elmes has experience conducting observational studies evaluating utilization of interventions aimed at improving health outcomes in vulnerable populations and qualitative studies to elevate and integrate the voices of people who use drugs into the programs that serve them.
Dr. Elmes is also engaged in educational research, particularly the integration of competency-based curricular models into pharmacy education. She has been recognized by the Department for her work, including the Publication of the Year Award (2023) and the Best Poster Award by the ACCP Education and Training Practice and Research Network (2024).
Teaching Statement:
Dr. Elmes has taught in core and elective didactic courses as well as patient care skills labs at the College of Pharmacy. She has precepted pharmacy students completing introductory pharmacy practice experiences and pharmacy residents completing their academia elective. She was recognized as a recipient of the Frederick P. Siegel Innovative Teaching Award for the Integration of Gradescope into Patient Care Skills Labs at UIC.
Dr. Elmes participates in interprofessional teaching, precepting medical students, medical residents, and nurse practitioner fellows in their substance use disorder experiences.
She serves as the Chair of the Education and Training Practice and Research Network of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and has given numerous invited continuing education talks at local, regional, and national venues.
