Overview:
As the Director of the Tobacco Treatment Center at UIH, I am passionate about helping patients with nicotine and tobacco dependence to become abstinent. I am the medication expert in the UIH pulmonary clinic, ensuring our asthma and COPD patients have the safest and most effective medications. In the UIC College of Pharmacy, I enjoy teaching pulmonary therapeutics and having students work with me in the outpatient clinical setting.

Research Interests:
Research areas of interest include tobacco dependence, asthma and COPD medication and pharmacist’s roles in disease state management. I have experience working as multi-national study site coordinator, primary investigator and also as a mentor for residency and student projects.

Teaching Statement:
At the professional level, autonomy and responsibility are key to building confident and competent clinical pharmacists. Using problem-solving skills to help the inter-professional team provide the best patient care is ideal. Applying learned skills in the classroom, like treating tobacco dependence or inhaler selection and caring for the patient in the hospital or clinic has been part of my teaching practice for most of my career. Modeling patient interviews to include patient autonomy and motivational interviewing skills allows students to learn how to build relationships and rapport with patients. Students leave the classroom and the clinical setting with practical skills that can be applied in almost all areas of pharmacy practice.
