Overview:
Dr. Rosalyn P. Vellurattil is Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Systems, Outcomes, and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy.
She has overseen the Office of Assessment since 2013, and is involved in curricular and programmatic assessment, faculty development, accreditation, strategic planning, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
She earned her Pharm.D. from UIC COP and completed post-graduate training in primary care and education at Midwestern University. She was an education scholar in the teaching excellence fellowship at the UIC College of Medicine (2015), a leadership fellow in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Academic Leadership Fellowship Program (2017), and an influential thought leader fellow with The OpEd Project and the University of Illinois System (2023). She earned her certification in healthcare continuing professional development in 2017.
Dr. Vellurattil has been an educator, scholar, and mentor in pharmacy academia for two decades. She has served on numerous college/university and national committees; task forces at AACP, ACCP, and ACPE; and on local, national and international advisory boards. She is an active member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance Pharmacy Assessment Collaborative, and was Chair in 2023-2024. She is also an active AACP member and was appointed to the Assessment SIG Executive Committee from 2019-2021 to contribute to its leadership and direction. Most recently, Dr. Vellurattil serves the pharmacy academy on the Council of Deans Mentoring Task Force, and a joint Council of Deans/Council of Faculties Task Force addressing Accreditation Standards 2025 and Opportunities to the Academy.
Research Interests:
Dr. Vellurattil’s research interests include the scholarship of teaching, learning, and assessment, leadership, and personal/professional development. Some of her most rewarding publications include authoring the book, “Pharmacy Research: A How-To Guide for Students, Residents, and New practitioners,” which has been used across the US to engage novice students and clinical pharmacist practitioners in the basics of research principles, methods, and practices. Further, recognizing the struggles faced attempting to achieve work-life balance, Dr. Vellurattil was Lead Editor of “A Pharmacist Parent’s Guide to Work-Life Balance,” a book aimed at promoting success amongst pharmacy professionals in finding personal and professional equilibrium.
Dr. Vellurattil is recognized for high quality research and collaboration; she was part of a multidisciplinary faculty team that was honored with the prestigious AACP Rufus A. Lyman Award in 2019, presented for the best paper published the previous year appearing in the American Journal of Pharmacy Education. She, along with a national team of colleagues in pharmacy assessment, was doubly honored with the Assessment SIG Collaborative Publication Award in the same year, research findings of which has been used by institutions to guide development and improvement of assessment structure and processes.
Teaching Statement:
Dr. Vellurattil has taught Doctor of Pharmacy students in both core didactic and elective courses at UIC COP. She has also precepted fourth year students on advanced pharmacy practice experiences, and is faculty advisor to a group of 4-5 students annually. She has received national awards for Excellence in Assessment in 2016 from AACP, and Excellence in Educational Design in 2018 from the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions.
Dr. Vellurattil incorporates adult and interprofessional learning principles, educational activity planning and evaluation practices in her teaching. From 2013-2018, she was the Continuing Pharmacy Education Administrator in the Office of Continuing Education and Meeting Services, overseeing over 150 local, national, international continuing education programs for pharmacist practitioners and pharmacy technicians annually.
