Pre-Pharmacy Prerequisite Coursework

Applicants to the College of Pharmacy must complete the required pre-pharmacy prerequisite coursework areas (with a minimum of 65 semester or 97.5 quarter credits) by the end of the spring semester (or no later than the first week of June for schools not on a semester system) before they would begin the professional program. Courses may be taken at the UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or at any regionally accredited college or university and must include at least the following.  AP and test-out credits will be accepted to meet the required pre-pharmacy prerequisite coursework as long as they are transcript recognized by the college or university attended.  Pre-Pharmacy Prerequisite Coursework Guides are available for most Illinois schools and some out-of-state schools.  Each course may be used only once to meet requirement areas.

*Each course must be a minimum of 3 semester or 4 quarter credits.
**If this coursework does not add up to at least 65 semester or 97.5 quarter credits, then additional prerequisite credits must be taken to meet the minimum credit requirement.

Note: If science coursework was taken more than five years prior to admission application, students must have their transcripts evaluated by a College of Pharmacy admissions counselor.

 

Explanation of the Required Pre-Pharmacy Prerequisite Coursework

Communication

      To fulfill this requirement, an applicant must complete a total of 3 semester/quarter courses in written and speech communication.

  • Written communication is defined as any composition or rhetoric course. Writing intensive courses (if designated as such by the institution) may also be used.
  • Speech communication is defined as any public speaking or interpersonal communication course.


     

Life Sciences

  • 

General Biology w/lab - minimum of 2 semester or 3 quarter courses and labs

          To fulfill this requirement, an applicant must complete a two-semester or three quarter sequence in general biology.
          Each semester/quarter must include a laboratory. 

  • Anatomy and Physiology - minimum of 2 semester or 2 to 3 quarter courses



          To fulfill this requirement, an applicant must complete a two-semester or a three-quarter sequence in anatomy and physiology.
          If a school does not offer an anatomy and physiology sequence, one course in human anatomy and one course in human physiology (semester or quarter) will fulfill the requirement.

  • Microbiology w/lab - minimum of 1 semester/quarter course and labs
     
  • Advanced Biology - minimum of 1 semester/quarter course
    To fulfill this requirement, an applicant must complete an advanced biology course.  Genetics is recommended, but molecular or cellular biology also fulfill this requirement.  Any other course must focus on the human body.

Physical Sciences



  • General (inorganic) Chemistry w/lab - minimum of 2 semester or 3 quarter courses and labs



          To fulfill this requirement, an applicant must complete a two-semester or three-quarter sequence in general chemistry.
          Each semester must include a laboratory.

  • 

Organic Chemistry w/lab - minimum of 2 semester or 3 quarter courses and lab(s)

          

To fulfill this requirement, an applicant must take a two-semester or three-quarter sequence in organic chemistry and corresponding labs.

  • 

Physics - minimum of 1 semester course


     
  • Biochemistry - minimum of 1 semester course
    



Mathematics/Statistics

  • Calculus - minimum of 1 semester course



          Derivatives and integrals must be covered to fulfill this requirement. 

  • Statistics - minimum of 1 semester course


     

Humanities



      This requirement can be fulfilled by 1 semester/quarter course from areas such philosophy, religious studies, English literature, history, and art appreciation.


 

Social and Behavioral Sciences

      This requirement can be fulfilled by 1 semester/quarter course from areas such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics, political science, and geography.
