Plachetka Scholars

John and Clare

The COVID-19 pandemic is both a health crisis and an economic crisis. For many pharmacy students, the outbreak has created enormous financial stress because of the loss of employment, additional demands associated with child or family responsibilities, or mounting student loans.

A heartfelt thanks go out to John Plachetka, BS ’76, PharmD, and his wife, Clare, for recognizing this sensitive issue and committing to solve it. The Plachetkas reached out to the College to provide 50 scholarships over the next year to students who are facing these immediate financial hardships.

“Some people just do the right thing,” said UIC College of Pharmacy Dean, Glen Schumock. Schumock went on to say that the Plachetkas have a long history of supporting the college (including the Pozen Plaza) and are extraordinary philanthropists. “They saw a need, and they want to help. We can’t thank them enough.”

Kara Brown

I am the first in my family to pursue graduate school.  I am a mother of two, and every little bit helps during these trying times.

By awarding me this scholarship, you have lightened my financial burden, which is going to allow me to focus on learning.  Your generosity is inspiring, and I hope someday I can help students achieve their goals as you have done for me.

I am honored and humbled that I was selected as one of the recipients of this scholarship.  I will continue making myself and UIC proud of the pharmacy leader I strive to be.
