There are ample opportunities at UIC for specialized training after completing a pharmacy practice residency. To further the residents’ clinical abilities, UIC offers specialized residencies in:
Ambulatory Care
The PGY2 Residency in Ambulatory Care develops expertise in the provision of pharmacotherapy to ambulatory care patients by clinical service with educational and scholarly activity.
Cardiology
The Department of Pharmacy Practice has provided postdoctoral training specializing in the study and treatment of cardiovascular disease for nearly 30 years. Our 1-year ASHP-accredited PGY2 Cardiology Residency continues that tradition. The goal of this residency is to afford the opportunity to develop expert knowledge and skills in the area of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy through clinical service, education, and scholarly activities.
Clinical Pharmacogenomics
The UIC-NorthShore PGY-2 Clinical Pharmacogenomics (PGx) Residency is a unique opportunity where the resident will spend 50% of their time at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Pharmacy/University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics (UI Health) and 50% of their time at Northshore University HealthSystem. UIC/UI Health and NorthShore University HealthSystem are leaders in pharmacogenomics clinical implementation and have complimentary focuses to their implementations. Upon completion of the UIC-NorthShore PGx residency, the resident will be well versed in inpatient and outpatient implementations of clinical pharmacogenomics. This comprehensive training will prepare the resident to be a competitive candidate for a wide range of pharmacogenomics practice, research, and education positions.
Critical Care Pharmacy
The Critical Care Team established in 2000 within the Departments of Hospital Pharmacy Services and Pharmacy Practice offers an ASHP-accredited PGY2 Residency in Critical Care Pharmacy.
Drug Information
The goal of the residency is to enhance the resident’s clinical skills and expertise in: efficient retrieval and critical evaluation of the biomedical literature, communication of evidence-based information, medical writing, formulary management/prior authorization, and didactic and experiential teaching.
Emergency Medicine
This ASHP accredited PGY2 Residency in Emergency Medicine develops expertise in the provision of pharmaceutical care in the Emergency Department setting.
Emergency Medicine (Rockford Campus)
This PGY2 Residency in Emergency Medicine on the UIC Health Sciences Campus Rockford develops expertise in the provision of pharmaceutical care in the Emergency Department setting.
Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership
This goal of this PGY2 residency in Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership is to develop the pharmacy leaders of tomorrow. The resident will receive extensive training in all key pharmacy department administrative areas to allow him/her to be qualified for a variety of management/leadership positions upon completion of the residency.
HIV Care
The PGY2 Residency in HIV Care develops expertise in the provision of pharmacotherapy to HIV-positive patients by combining clinical service with education and scholarly activity.
ID
The University of Illinois Hospital and Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Section offers a one-year PGY2 residency in Infectious Diseases (ID). The goal of the program is to provide the incoming resident with opportunities to develop expertise in the practice of infectious diseases pharmacy as a key player in the interdisciplinary ID team. The Section of Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy has provided a wide range of scholarly, teaching, and clinical services to the University and the Chicagoland area since its inception in 1996.
Oncology
The Oncology PGY2 Residency is for practitioners desiring advanced training in oncology pharmacotherapy through provision of clinical experiences to create a well-rounded, fully competent specialist.
Pediatrics
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), College of Pharmacy is offering a one-year ASHP accredited pediatric pharmacy residency (PGY2).
The purpose of this program, which focuses on the refinement of clinical skills, is to train the resident for a career as a pediatric clinical pharmacy practitioner. The pediatric residency program at UIC has been in existence since 1982 and has trained over twenty pediatric clinical pharmacy practitioners.
Solid Organ Transplant
The Division of Transplantation at the University of Illinois Chicago is a well-established program that currently offers kidney, liver, pancreas, and small bowel transplantation services. Transplant surgeons, transplant medicine specialists, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care to all patients undergoing transplant surgery. During the year 2022, there were 265 kidney transplants, 51 liver transplants, 29 kidney-pancreas transplants, 2 pancreas transplants, and 3 intestine transplants performed at UI Health.
Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership
The UIC PGY2 Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency is designed to provide the unique opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and comprehensive management and leadership experiences to lead teams in a health-system specialty pharmacy. The graduates of the program will be prepared to assume high level managerial and leadership responsibilities in both clinical and operational areas.
